2North: The Name

2North Expeditions

Sometimes names just come to you. This…wasn’t that.

We spent days workshopping names by theme: astronomical, Latin, luxury, travel, etc. Some were pretentious. Others, silly. Some felt forced. None sounded right.

We were lost. We needed to get back to familiar ground; to a path that led us somewhere. What we needed was a compass; one that indicated true north.

And there it was: true north. Words that felt almost right. Just a little too common, too trite. We dropped the “r”.

It sounded like true north; suggested it. Insert a number in place of the letters, and it looked a little cooler. With family and friends we started referring to it as 2N. Then a new connection hit.

Fitting, we thought, for a Nana and a Nottberg to have a company called 2N. That sealed the deal. 2North Expeditions was born.

2North: The Lore

Our story, in our words.

We met in Antarctica.

Temu was working—photographing and leading. Maggie was experiencing—learning and engaging.

The seeds of 2North began germinating in this most inhospitable of lands.

Maggie—a born traveler with all seven continents under her belt—was falling in love with the idea of a travel career. Temu, navigating a decades-long love affair with the road, was looking for a new challenge. What began as conversations about extraordinary places quickly became a discussion on what we love about travel, and how we could do that.

A chat in a quiet ship’s library overlooking ice floes and penguin rafts began the story. The opening chapters were largely behind the scenes. The rest will be written in some far-flung corner of the world. Join us and help write this story.

2North: The Values

They’re important. At least to us.

Be there for the part you came for.

We believe that the most meaningful travel is not defined simply by where you go, but by how you experience it, and with whom. A remarkable place matters. So does having the time to notice it, the people to share it with, and the freedom to think about nothing else.

We built 2North for travelers who want to venture beyond the familiar and experience places with intention. Our journeys are built around remote landscapes, remarkable cultures, unexpected experiences, and the kind of access that transforms a destination into something entirely unique and unforgettable. Sometimes that means reaching a genuinely remote part of the world. Other times, it means experiencing a more familiar destination in a way very few visitors ever do.

Most importantly, we want to build a company that encourages people to be present and curious. Travel gives us the rare opportunity to change our usual pace, to step outside ourselves, and pay attention. Sit around a table with people you just met. Stand somewhere impossibly beautiful without thinking about what comes next. Adventure should feel exhilarating—not exhausting. Remote should not mean inaccessible.

We take care of what happens behind the scenes so you can be completely present for what is right in front of you. When you arrive, there is only one thing left to do: simply experience.

2North: The Difference

We’ve been there. We’ll go with you.

Collectively, Temu and Maggie have traveled to more than 90 countries, and have each traveled to all seven continents. Years have been spent scouting destinations, learning how to explore, designing itineraries, building relationships, and understanding what really creates an exceptional trip. Temu has spent nearly two decades scouting, planning, photographing, and leading expedition travel. Maggie has circumnavigated the globe twice; curiosity taking her from living in Australia to making Bollywood films in Mumbai and working in rural Kasigau, Kenya.

We do not believe exceptional travel can be designed entirely from behind a desk. The journeys we offer are places we have experienced and scouted ourselves. Routes are considered firsthand. Experiences are vetted. Details are questioned and tested. We search for the local guide with an extraordinary story, the private experience that isn’t advertised, the unexpected detour worth making, and the locations that remind you why you traveled halfway around the world in the first place.

Every expedition is intentionally small, carefully considered, and personally connected to us. We scout. We plan. We refine. And when you travel with 2North, we are with you as your personal hosts throughout the journey. The people who designed your expedition are beside you: we know why each stop was chosen, understand the details behind the itinerary, and can adapt when the unexpected becomes part of the adventure.

Our goal is not to fill every hour of an itinerary. It is to make every hour matter.

Temu Nana

Jack of all trades. Master of some.

September 2008.

Five years removed from graduating with a degree in theatre from the University of Michigan, I was managing a 24-hour diner in the East Village, NYC. Out of the blue, a phone call changed my life.

My sister’s friend worked for a luxury, small-ship cruise company, and they were looking for tour managers. My sister thought I’d be good for it. One phone call, two interviews, and three weeks later I was on a plane to Athens. I knew my life had changed, but I couldn’t fathom what was to come.

The last 18 years took me around the globe multiple times, to all seven continents. From Theyyam rituals in rural villages of Kerala to the Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan. From stunning auroral displays in Norway to radio telescopes in the Atacama desert. I’ve polar plunged in the Antarctic Ocean and eaten mopani worms in Namibia. Gazed at 700,000 king penguins in South Georgia and exchanged stories with the Embera in the Darien Gap. Dived with great white sharks off Port Lincoln, visited seemingly every Greco-Roman archaeological site in the Eastern Med, cruised the Bosphorus past Istanbul, and rested mere feet from fishing coastal brown bears in Katmai National Park.

To say I feel fortunate would be an incredible understatement. My career has allowed me to explore the world in ways I always dreamed of, but never thought possible.

A career on the road inevitably forces you to tackle every major challenge for which you prepare—delays, emergencies, medical evacuations, governmental issues, small-group dynamics, money/currency problems, pickpocketing, etc.—as well as those you couldn’t have dreamt. From the incredible to the (almost) unbelievable, I’ve seen a lot.

The beautiful thing about travel is that the difficulties you may encounter along the way are far, far outweighed by the experiences you never forget, the people with whom you share them, and a deep appreciation for this astounding planet we call home.

Now comes a new challenge, and new experiences. Alongside my partner Jasmine and our sons, Orion and Felix, I feel fortunate that the story I’ve written so far has been immensely enjoyable and full of wonder, awe, and appreciation. Can’t wait to see what the next few chapters will contain…

Maggie Nottberg

Lifelong wanderer. Curiosity addict.

I’ve always believed the world is the best classroom, and that its most memorable lessons rarely come from sitting still. Driven by endless curiosity, I seek out experiences that deepen my understanding of people, cultures, landscapes, and the stories that connect them—and invite me to be fully present along the way. For me, travel is about far more than simply seeing somewhere new. It’s about asking questions, noticing the little details, sharing meals with the people I’m lucky enough to meet, and coming home with stories and memories to last a lifetime.

A lifelong lover of the wild world, I’m passionate about making exploration feel possible and inviting, even for people who may not have many opportunities to venture far from home. I believe extraordinary travel should inspire a greater sense of responsibility toward both the environment and ourselves, encouraging us to move through the world with intention, curiosity, and plenty of enthusiasm!

Naturally social, painfully extroverted, and always drawn to the wonderfully unexpected, I bring warmth, energy, and a distinctly personal touch to every 2North journey. I love bringing people together, discovering what makes each destination special, and creating experiences—and friendships—that linger long after the suitcases are unpacked. The quickest way to win me over? Make a Monty Python joke or tell me about a movie or book you can’t stop thinking about.
